Beer & Waterfall Tour
*This Tour is offered on Friday & Sundays. Tour Cost is $159 per person all inclusive. Reservations are required.
Craft beer and the great outdoors – it’s a marriage as harmonious as barley and hops. And it’s the cornerstone of the brewing renaissance going on in Western North Carolina these days, with such venerable microbreweries as Sierra Nevada and New Belgium recently choosing the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains as the home for their East Coast expansions.
Dale Katechis, founder and owner of Colorado-based Oskar Blues Brewery, became so enamored with the wooded wonderland of Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, N.C., during many visits over the years that he, too, selected the area to establish a sister facility for Oskar Blues out East. Calling Pisgah Forest “magical,” Katechis has said there is nowhere else on Earth he’d be willing to travel from his home in Colorado to oversee a second operation.
At Travels in Beer Tours, we think it’s a pretty special place, too, which is why we have developed our unique Beer and Waterfall Tour. With this package, we will take you on a 1.5-mile round-trip hike on some of the very same trails where Katechis enjoys escaping on his mountain bike, visit two picturesque waterfalls and enjoy a hearty lunch in the forest.
Afterward, you’ll head to one of the most distinctive breweries in the Southeast, Brevard Brewing Co., which specializes in making European-style lagers. Learn the true difference between ales and lagers and why owner/brewer Kyle Williams prefers the latter despite their lengthier production cycle, and sample the smooth complexity of such classic styles as Bohemian Pilsner and Munich Dunkel.
Then, it’s off to Oskar Blues just up the road, where you’ll witness the brewing process on a much larger scale and go behind the scenes of one of America’s most creative and fastest growing breweries. Walk among the rows of 200-barrel fermentation and bright-beer tanks – each capable of holding more than 6,000 gallons of beer; learn why a decade ago Katechis made Oskar Blues the first craft brewer to put its wildly popular beer in cans, and why cans are actually better for beer than bottles; and witness a live packaging run in action! All while sampling Oskar Blues’ award-winning beers, from the quenchable Mama’s Little Yella Pils to the malty Old Chub Scottish-style ale to Oskar Blues’ flagship Dale’s Pale Ale – one of several of the company’s notoriously hop-forward brews.
We’ll end the day with a complimentary tasting back at The Poe House in downtown Hendersonville. Come along for the ride!
